About the GWM Tank 300
The Tank 300 is built for serious off-road driving and all-day comfort. It’s smaller and easier to handle than a bakkie camper, which makes it a good fit for couples who want a comfortable SUV on long tar stretches and a capable 4×4 once the road turns to gravel. The 9-speed automatic, all-terrain tyres and recovery kit are ready for public 4×4 tracks across Southern Africa.
You sleep in a flip-open rooftop tent measuring 1.3 m × 2.4 m. It takes about five minutes to set up, and a ladder takes you up to the mattress, sleeping bags and pillows. The 2 m, 180° awning gives you shade for lunch stops and evenings at camp.
The kitchen kit includes a 35-litre fridge or freezer, a gas cooker with a 3 kg bottle, a 2.5-litre kettle, a pot and a pan, plus crockery and cutlery for two. A 40-litre water tank and a 20-litre jerry can travel with you. LED light strips and a USB-charging lantern light up camp after dark, and 12V/220V power works when you plug in at a campsite.
There’s no toilet or shower on board, so plan to use campsite ablutions. Collect the Tank 300 in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Windhoek, Maun or Kasane and head for the Kruger, the Kgalagadi, Etosha or the Okavango Delta. Whether you call it a 4×4 camper, a safari camper or a camping car, send us your route and travel dates and we’ll check availability and quote you on this 4×4 camper hire option.

GWM TANK 300 FAQs
How old do I need to be to hire the Tank 300?
The minimum age is 25 and the maximum is 80. Drivers aged 23 or 24 who have held a licence for at least three years can rent it for a surcharge. You’ll need a valid Code B/EB licence printed in English, or an International Driving Permit.
How long does the rooftop tent take to set up?
About five minutes. The tent flips open, and a ladder takes you up to the mattress. The sleeping bags and pillows can stay inside when you pack it away.
Is there a toilet or shower?
No. The Tank 300 has no toilet, shower, or hot water, so plan to use campsite ablutions. If you want a toilet on board, look at the NAVI or the Discoverer FunXA.
Can I take the Tank 300 off-road?
Yes, on tar, gravel and recognised public 4×4 tracks. Dunes and driving where there’s no obvious track aren’t allowed, and damage to the undercarriage or from water crossings isn’t covered by the waiver.
What's the minimum rental period?
It’s 7 days when you collect from Johannesburg, Cape Town, Windhoek, Maun or Kasane. Other pick-up points need at least 15 days and must be arranged in advance.
