Chobe National Park

4x4 Camper Hire in Chobe National Park

Huge herds of elephants, the winding Chobe River, spectacular sunsets and wildlife seemingly everywhere you look, Chobe National Park is one of Botswana’s most exciting destinations to explore by 4×4 camper.

For Chobe and a wider Botswana road trip, we recommend a 4×4 camper rather than a motorhome. Road conditions can vary considerably, particularly once you leave the main routes, and a 4×4 camper gives you the ground clearance, capability and flexibility needed to experience more of Botswana.

This is a destination where the journey really is part of the adventure.

Welcome to Elephant Country

Chobe National Park is famous for its elephants, and for good reason.

The park and surrounding region support one of Africa’s largest concentrations of elephants, with particularly impressive numbers gathering near the Chobe River during the dry season.

Watching a family of elephants walk down to the river is unforgettable. Seeing dozens, or sometimes far more, spread across the floodplains is something else entirely.

Elephants aren’t the only attraction.

Chobe is also home to lion, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippo, crocodile, wild dog and numerous antelope species, together with exceptional birdlife.

Why We Recommend a 4x4 Camper

While a motorhome might be suitable for some of Botswana’s main tarred routes, we recommend a 4×4 camper for travellers planning to explore Chobe.

The conditions within and around Botswana’s national parks can include sand, gravel, uneven tracks and seasonal water crossings. A 4×4 camper provides better ground clearance and considerably more flexibility than a conventional motorhome.

A 4×4 camper is also particularly useful because Chobe is often only one stop on a much bigger Botswana adventure.

Depending on the 4×4 camper you choose, your vehicle may include rooftop sleeping facilities, cooking equipment, refrigeration, water storage and other camping essentials.

You have your transport, accommodation and kitchen travelling with you.

The Chobe Riverfront

The Chobe Riverfront is one of the most popular areas of the national park.

Wildlife gathers along the river, particularly during the dry season, creating excellent opportunities to see elephants, buffalo and antelope. Predators are never too far behind.

A river cruise is also well worth including.

Seeing Chobe from the water gives you a completely different perspective. Hippos appear between the reeds, crocodiles lie along the banks and elephants regularly come down to drink, swim and cool off.

Spend the morning exploring by 4×4 camper, then experience the river by boat in the afternoon.

It’s difficult to imagine a better safari day.

Where Do You Collect Your 4x4 Camper?

There are several convenient collection points for travellers planning a 4×4 camper adventure through Botswana.

Johannesburg is a popular collection point, particularly if you want to make the journey into Botswana part of a longer Southern African road trip. It generally offers a good selection of 4×4 campers and provides an easy starting point for travelling north.

Within Botswana, there are two primary collection depots, Maun and Kasane.

Maun is an excellent starting point for travellers heading towards the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve and the wider northern Botswana wilderness.

Kasane is particularly convenient for Chobe National Park and travellers planning to combine Botswana with Victoria Falls, Namibia, Zambia or Zimbabwe.

A secondary depot is also available in Gaborone, depending on the supplier and vehicle availability. As a secondary depot, additional relocation or collection fees may apply.

If you collect your 4×4 camper in Johannesburg and cross into Botswana, always check the cross border requirements when booking. Your rental company will need to provide the correct documentation for taking the vehicle into Botswana and any other countries included in your itinerary.

Camping Around Chobe

Travelling with a 4×4 camper allows you to experience Botswana in one of the best possible ways, camping close to the wilderness.

There are campsites within and around Chobe National Park, together with camping options around Kasane, the main tourism hub for the area.

For travellers venturing into the park, campsites can be considerably more remote than the typical caravan park experience back home.

That is exactly what makes them special.

After sunset, the sounds of the bush take over. You might hear elephants moving nearby, hippos calling in the distance or lions somewhere beyond camp.

In Botswana, camping is not simply somewhere to sleep, it is part of the safari.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Chobe?

Chobe can be visited throughout the year, although the experience changes with the seasons.

The dry season, generally from May to October, is particularly popular for wildlife viewing. As water becomes scarce away from permanent sources, large numbers of animals gather around the Chobe River.

The greener summer months bring dramatic landscapes, impressive birdlife and newborn animals, although rain can make some routes more challenging.

This is another reason why travelling in a properly equipped 4×4 camper makes sense.

Chobe Is Perfect for a Bigger Botswana Adventure

One of the biggest reasons to choose a 4×4 camper is what lies beyond Chobe.

Combine Chobe with the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve, Makgadikgadi Pans or Nxai Pan, and you have the ingredients for an extraordinary Botswana road trip.

Chobe is also conveniently positioned close to the borders of Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Victoria Falls is relatively close to Kasane, making it a popular addition to a Chobe itinerary, subject to your 4×4 camper rental conditions and cross border permissions.

With enough time, you can create an incredible journey through several of Southern Africa’s most famous wilderness areas.

Take Your Time

Distances in Botswana can be deceptive, and road conditions can change dramatically.

Don’t plan your trip based purely on kilometres.

A relatively short distance on a sandy track can take considerably longer than the same distance on a South African highway. Wildlife encounters, road conditions and the occasional elephant refusing to move can also affect your schedule.

That is part of travelling through Botswana.

Allow plenty of time, plan your fuel and supplies carefully, and avoid rushing from one destination to the next.

Start Your Chobe 4x4 Adventure

For Chobe National Park, our recommendation is a 4×4 camper rather than a motorhome.

It gives you greater freedom, better access to Botswana’s wilderness areas and the opportunity to combine Chobe with some of Southern Africa’s most spectacular destinations.

Collect your 4×4 camper, stock up for the journey and head north. Chobe might be the destination, but getting there is all part of the adventure.
