Drakensberg

Motorhome & 4x4 Camper Hire in the Drakensberg

Towering mountains, green valleys, winding roads, waterfalls and some of the most spectacular scenery in South Africa, the Drakensberg is an incredible destination to explore by motorhome or 4×4 camper.

Whether you’re looking for hiking and adventure or simply somewhere beautiful to escape for a few days, travelling by camper gives you the freedom to move between different parts of the mountains without constantly packing bags and changing accommodation.

Wake up beneath the peaks, make coffee outside your camper and decide what today’s adventure will be.

Discover the Dragon Mountains

The Drakensberg, meaning Dragon Mountains, forms part of the Great Escarpment and stretches for hundreds of kilometres across eastern South Africa.

Some of its most dramatic scenery lies within the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its spectacular landscapes, biodiversity and remarkable collection of ancient San rock art.

The mountains aren’t one single destination either.

There is the Northern Drakensberg, with famous landmarks such as the Amphitheatre and Tugela Falls, the Central Drakensberg, around Cathedral Peak and Champagne Valley, and the Southern Drakensberg, with quieter mountain scenery around Underberg and Himeville.

Having your own camper makes it much easier to experience more than one area.

A Destination Made for the Outdoors

The Drakensberg is one of South Africa’s great outdoor playgrounds.

There are hiking trails ranging from gentle walks to serious mountain adventures, waterfalls, horse riding, mountain biking, fly fishing, birding and countless places to simply stop and enjoy the scenery.

One day might involve hiking beneath towering cliffs, the next could be spent exploring a small Midlands town or doing very little beside your campsite.

And you don’t have to be a hardcore hiker to appreciate the mountains.

Sometimes a camping chair, something cold from the fridge and a view of the peaks are enough.

Motorhome or 4x4 Camper?

Unlike some of Southern Africa’s more remote destinations, both motorhomes and 4×4 campers can work well for a Drakensberg holiday.

A motorhome is a comfortable option for travellers using established campsites and sticking to the main routes. It provides additional living space and makes longer stays particularly relaxing.

A 4×4 camper offers greater flexibility, particularly if your itinerary includes gravel roads, rural areas or more adventurous destinations before or after the Drakensberg.

You don’t generally need a 4×4 to experience the major Drakensberg attractions, but road conditions can vary as you move away from the main routes, especially after heavy rain.

Where Do You Collect Your Camper?

Johannesburg is the most popular collection point for motorhomes and 4×4 campers heading towards the Drakensberg and generally offers the widest selection of rental vehicles.

From Johannesburg, you can reach the Northern or Central Drakensberg as part of a comfortable day’s drive.

Some itineraries can also begin in Durban, depending on vehicle availability and the rental supplier. Durban is particularly convenient for the Southern and Central Drakensberg, but Johannesburg generally provides travellers with more vehicle choices.

Kindly note that Durban is a secondary depot and vehicle relocation fees apply.

Whichever collection point you choose, don’t treat the drive as wasted time.

Small towns, farm stalls and changing scenery make the journey into the mountains part of the experience.

Camping in the Drakensberg

One of the biggest attractions of travelling by camper is the selection of campsites and caravan parks scattered throughout the region.

You’ll find camping options around popular areas such as the Royal Natal National Park, Cathedral Peak, Champagne Valley, Giant’s Castle and the Southern Drakensberg.

Many campsites offer exactly what you came for, mountains towering above you, cool evenings and plenty of open space.

Weather can change quickly in the Drakensberg, particularly at higher elevations. Summer can bring dramatic afternoon thunderstorms, while winter mornings and evenings can become very cold.

That is all part of mountain travel, just arrive prepared.

Don't Try to See It All in One Day

The Drakensberg might look relatively compact on a map, but travelling between different sections often takes longer than expected.

There isn’t one road running neatly along the base of the entire mountain range.

If you want to explore the Northern, Central and Southern Drakensberg, you’ll often need to travel back towards the main roads before heading into the next valley.

Give yourself time.

Spending several nights in different areas is far more enjoyable than trying to race from one attraction to another.

Make the Drakensberg Part of a Bigger Road Trip

The Drakensberg fits beautifully into a longer South African motorhome or camper itinerary.

From Johannesburg, you could travel through the mountains before continuing towards KwaZulu-Natal and the Indian Ocean, combining mountain scenery with a few days on the coast.

Another popular option is to explore the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, with its farm stalls, restaurants, small towns and countryside, before heading deeper into the mountains.

More adventurous travellers with a suitable 4×4 could also include Lesotho as part of a wider itinerary, subject to vehicle rental conditions and cross-border permissions.

Mountains in the morning and the coast a few days later, that is one of the advantages of travelling with your accommodation behind you.

Start Your Drakensberg Road Trip

Whether you’re planning a quiet mountain escape, a hiking holiday or including the Drakensberg in a longer South African adventure, a motorhome or 4×4 camper gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace.

Collect your camper, head towards the mountains and leave some space in the itinerary. The Drakensberg has a habit of convincing travellers to stay a little longer.
