Motorhome & Camper Hire on the Garden Route
Ocean views, ancient forests, mountain passes, quiet lagoons and some of South Africa’s best coastal towns, the Garden Route is almost purpose-built for a motorhome or camper holiday.
Stretching along the southern Cape coast, the Garden Route is one of South Africa’s most popular self-drive destinations. The distances between stops are manageable, the scenery changes constantly, and there is always another beach, forest walk or small town waiting around the next corner.
One of South Africa's Great Road Trips
The Garden Route generally runs between Mossel Bay and Storms River, although most travellers extend their trip to include Cape Town, the Overberg, Route 62 or the Eastern Cape.
Popular stops include Mossel Bay, George, Wilderness, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Storms River.
But one of the best things about travelling by camper is discovering the places between them.
Spend the morning walking along Wilderness Beach, have lunch overlooking the Knysna Lagoon, then continue towards Plettenberg Bay for the night.
There is no need to pack and unpack at every stop, your little home simply travels with you.
Mountains, Forests and the Indian Ocean
The name Garden Route might suggest manicured gardens, but the real attraction is its extraordinary natural scenery.
The route squeezes between the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma mountains and the Indian Ocean, creating a landscape filled with indigenous forests, lakes, rivers, cliffs and beaches.
Outdoor activities are everywhere.
You can hike through forest, kayak along rivers, visit nature reserves, go whale watching in season, explore quiet beaches or simply find somewhere beautiful to stop for lunch.
And if your idea of adventure involves doing absolutely nothing beside a lagoon for an afternoon, that works too.
Motorhome or Camper?
A motorhome is particularly well suited to the Garden Route.
Most of the major attractions are easily accessible by tar road, so you don’t need a 4×4 to enjoy the region. Motorhomes also provide extra living space and comfort, which is ideal if you’re spending a week or more slowly travelling along the coast.
A 4×4 camper is a great alternative for travellers who want a more adventurous vehicle or who plan to continue beyond the Garden Route into more remote parts of South Africa.
Either way, this is a destination where having your own wheels makes a huge difference.
Where Do You Collect Your Camper?
Cape Town is the most popular collection point for travellers planning a Garden Route motorhome or camper holiday and generally offers the widest selection of rental vehicles.
Rather than rushing directly to the Garden Route, consider making the journey part of your holiday.
From Cape Town, you can travel through the Overberg, stopping around Hermanus, Cape Agulhas or Swellendam before continuing towards Mossel Bay.
Another option is to travel inland through the Cape Winelands and Route 62, visit towns such as Montagu and Oudtshoorn, then cross the mountains towards George and the coast.
You can even use one route going out and another coming back, creating a fantastic circular road trip from Cape Town.
Camping Along the Garden Route
The Garden Route has a good selection of caravan parks, campsites and holiday resorts suitable for motorhomes and campers.
Some are close to beaches, others overlook rivers, lakes or forests.
Areas around Wilderness, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Tsitsikamma are particularly popular, and staying in different places along the route means you can experience much more of the region without spending hours driving every day.
Wake up near the beach, make breakfast outside your camper and decide where you’re going next.
That freedom is exactly what makes the Garden Route so enjoyable by motorhome.
Don't Rush It
You could technically drive large sections of the Garden Route in a day.
Don’t.
The Garden Route rewards travellers who slow down.
Give yourself time for the unexpected stops, the roadside farm stall you didn’t know existed, the forest walk that takes longer than planned, or the beach that convinces you to stay another night.
For most travellers, at least a week gives you a much better taste of the region, while a longer trip allows you to combine it with Cape Town, the Winelands, Route 62 or the Eastern Cape.
Make It a Bigger South African Adventure
The Garden Route is easy to combine with several other popular destinations.
Start with a few days in the Cape Winelands, travel through the Overberg to the Garden Route, continue towards the Eastern Cape, or return to Cape Town through the Klein Karoo along Route 62.
With a motorhome or camper, you don’t have to choose just one destination.
The road between them becomes part of the adventure.
Start Your Garden Route Road Trip
Whether you’re planning a relaxed coastal escape or a longer South African road trip, a motorhome or camper gives you the freedom to experience the Garden Route at your own pace.
Collect in Cape Town, follow the coast and leave some room in the itinerary for unexpected stops. The Garden Route has plenty of them.
