Motorhome & 4x4 Camper Hire on the KZN South Coast
Warm Indian Ocean water, subtropical vegetation, golden beaches, coastal forests and relaxed seaside towns, the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast is a fantastic destination to explore by motorhome or 4×4 camper.
Stretching south from Durban towards the Eastern Cape border, the KZN South Coast offers an easy combination of beaches, nature reserves, small towns and outdoor adventures.
Best of all, the warm climate means this is a road trip destination that can be enjoyed throughout much of the year.
Follow the Coast South
The KZN South Coast is made for taking your time.
Popular stops include Scottburgh, Pennington, Hibberdene, Umtentweni, Port Shepstone, Shelly Beach, Margate, Ramsgate and Port Edward, with plenty of smaller beaches and coastal villages between them.
Travelling by motorhome or 4×4 camper means you don’t have to choose one town and stay there for your entire holiday.
Spend a few days beside the beach, move further south, discover another favourite spot and stay a little longer.
The distances between towns are relatively short, which means less time driving and more time actually enjoying your holiday.
Beaches, Forests and Outdoor Adventures
The beaches might be the main attraction, but there is much more to the South Coast than swimming and sunshine.
The region offers nature reserves, hiking trails, mountain biking, fishing, surfing, diving, golf courses and excellent birdlife.
The warm Indian Ocean also makes the South Coast particularly popular for diving. Aliwal Shoal, near Umkomaas, and Protea Banks, near Shelly Beach, are internationally recognised dive sites.
Further south, the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve offers beautiful scenery, indigenous vegetation and hiking opportunities close to Port Edward.
Or you could do very little at all.
Find a campsite near the ocean, put out the camping chairs and spend the afternoon listening to the waves.
That’s a perfectly acceptable South Coast itinerary.
Motorhome or Camper?
Both a motorhome and 4×4 camper can work well for a KZN South Coast holiday.
A motorhome provides additional interior space and comfort, making it ideal for travellers planning to use established caravan parks and holiday resorts along the main coastal routes.
A 4×4 camper provides greater flexibility if your South Coast holiday forms part of a longer journey through KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape or more remote areas of Southern Africa.
You don’t need four wheel drive for the main South Coast routes, but a 4×4 camper can be useful if your itinerary eventually takes you onto gravel roads or into more adventurous destinations.
Where Do You Collect Your Motorhome or 4x4 Camper?
Durban is the closest collection point for travellers heading to the KZN South Coast.
However, Durban operates as a secondary depot for many rental suppliers. This means the motorhome or 4×4 camper may need to be relocated specifically for your booking, and additional relocation fees usually apply.
The alternative is to collect your motorhome or 4×4 camper in Johannesburg, where there is generally a wider selection of vehicles available.
Collecting in Johannesburg also gives you the opportunity to make the journey to KwaZulu-Natal part of a larger road trip. You could travel through the Drakensberg or KwaZulu-Natal Midlands before eventually reaching the coast.
If convenience is the priority, Durban is naturally closer. If vehicle choice and avoiding secondary depot relocation costs are more important, Johannesburg may be the better starting point.
Camping Along the South Coast
One of the reasons the KZN South Coast works so well for motorhome and 4×4 camper travel is the number of caravan parks, resorts and campsites throughout the region.
Many are close to the beach, and some offer direct or easy access to the coastline.
You can wake up early for a walk along the beach, make breakfast back at your motorhome or 4×4 camper, then decide whether the rest of the day involves exploring or doing absolutely nothing.
With the region’s subtropical climate, outdoor living is a big part of the experience.
When Is the Best Time to Visit?
The KZN South Coast can be enjoyed throughout the year.
Summers are warm, humid and green, with hot beach days and occasional thunderstorms.
Winter is particularly appealing. Days are generally mild and sunny, humidity is lower and the ocean remains relatively warm compared with much of South Africa’s coastline.
Winter also brings another attraction.
Between roughly June and November, migrating whales can often be spotted along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline.
Then there is the famous Sardine Run, a natural phenomenon that can occur during the cooler winter months when enormous shoals of sardines move along the coast, attracting dolphins, sharks, seabirds and other marine predators.
Timing the Sardine Run is never guaranteed, which is part of what makes it so exciting.
Make It a Bigger KwaZulu-Natal Road Trip
The South Coast is easy to combine with other destinations, particularly when you’re travelling with your own accommodation.
Head inland towards the Drakensberg, explore the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, spend some time around Durban, or continue south towards the Wild Coast and Eastern Cape.
With a 4×4 camper, more adventurous routes become possible as you travel further away from the main coastal roads.
You could spend one part of your holiday surrounded by mountains and another beside the Indian Ocean.
That’s the beauty of a camper road trip, you don’t have to choose just one.
Start Your KZN South Coast Road Trip
Whether you’re planning a relaxed beach holiday or including the South Coast in a bigger South African adventure, a motorhome or 4×4 camper gives you the freedom to explore the coastline at your own pace.
Collect in Durban or Johannesburg, head for the warm Indian Ocean and take your time travelling south. On the KZN South Coast, there is always another beach around the corner.
